Kitchen remodelling is among one of the most expensive and time consuming home processes. Therefore, much thought and planning should be put into designing a kitchen that is beautiful, functional and easy to work in. Here at Nicola Interiors, we believe modern interior designs should be implemented to suit your needs and personality. Below are a few guidelines to help you revamp the heart of your home.
Although it may be tempting, don’t prioritize the aesthetics of your kitchen when planning its design- always put function first. Ensure that all your kitchen tools are easily accessible and organized. Opt for appliances and surfaces that are easy to clean and care for, as well as being highly resistant to damage. Also, remember that there is no such thing as too much space and storage in a kitchen.
Go For Quality
The kitchen is the most used space in the home, therefore you should not compromise quality for cost. Invest in top quality door slides and hinges, so that cabinets and drawers will stay closed and intact. For cabinet interiors, opt for wood veneers instead, as they are more durable than melamine or particleboard. Make the most of your money by investing in quality appliances that will surely last long.
Design Wide Walkways
There is nothing worse than cooking in a crammed kitchen. Ensure that pathways around the kitchen are at least 36 inches wide, and paths within the cooking zone are at least 42 to 48 inches, to easily accommodate two people. Also, when planning, adjust kitchen islands accordingly.
Determine Cabinets and Drawers
For standard eight-foot high ceilings, it is best to choose cabinets that go to the ceiling, since they provide maximal storage, while leaving extra wall space for artwork or open shelving. If you have higher ceilings, ensure that there is approximately twelve to fifteen inches between the ceiling and the cabinet. To avoid clutter on countertops, consider deep drawers for easier access to pots and pans and cabinet designs with built-in storage for appliances.
Stain vs. Paint
Although stain graded cabinetry is more forgiving, most finishes date quickly and tend to be more costly than painted cabinets. Spray or ‘baked’ paint finished are just as reliable and provide a unique personality to kitchen cabinets.
Selecting a Countertop
For a warm and elegant look, white carrara marble (honed or acid washed and sealed) or stained wood are your best options. If you prefer a more sophisticated look, opt for honed Kirkstone slate, soapstone and Wiarton limestone, and plastic laminate. These countertops are much more budget friendly than wood or marble, and are considerably durable.
Install a Functional Island
Avoid placing a bulky cube in the middle of the kitchen. Open and airy islands provide elegance to a kitchen. If you choose to install a cooktop or dishwasher-sink combo, ensure that you keep appliances compact and to a minimal, in order to avoid clutter.
Easily Maintained and Manageable
When picking floor tiles, wall tiles, and countertops, opt for surfaces that are durable, and easy to work on and clean. Smooth finishes such as fine marble, ceramic tiles, and laminate counters are much easier to clean and maintain versus rough surfaces like brick or terra cotta.
Your kitchen should reflect you, and not look like a showroom. Avoid overdoing designs and details, instead, pick accent pieces that reflect the style of your home. Also, incorporate some DIY pieces that will add a unique flare to your kitchen, while saving you some money.
